Start with an unhurried arrival
Check-in is at 4 PM. Pick up groceries before settling in, then leave the first evening open for a simple dinner and arcade time. Dancing Bear has interior stairs, one full bathroom on the bedroom level and one half bath on the entry level.
The cabin’s large driveway is steep. The left side is less steep on approach. We recommend reversing down the driveway on arrival so you can drive forward when leaving, but only maneuver when visibility, traction and conditions allow. Mountain roads, snow and ice need extra care. Contact us before arrival if you’re unsure about the driveway or your vehicle.
Day 1: a gentle introduction to the Smokies
Start with Sugarlands Visitor Center for exhibits, restrooms and current park information. For a flexible riverside outing, walk part of the Gatlinburg Trail and turn around when your group is ready. The full out-and-back is about four miles and includes dirt, sidewalk and roadside sections, so a shorter stretch can be a better fit for little legs.
Traveling without a pet? The separate Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is a paved half-mile loop. It is a different trail from the Gatlinburg Trail and does not allow ordinary pets.
After lunch, choose more exploring or head back to enjoy the cabin. There’s no need to pair a full park day with another major attraction.
Day 2: choose one bigger outing
Mountain views and play at Anakeesta
Anakeesta combines views, gardens and family activities. Compare admission inclusions and optional extras before buying; parking is a separate consideration. The Crystal Express enclosed gondola opened in 2026, so older descriptions of the original lift may be out of date. Outdoor activities depend on the weather, and accessibility varies by feature. Ordinary pets are not permitted. Check the current FAQ for your group’s needs.
A scenic drive through Roaring Fork
If you prefer forest and stream scenery, consider Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. This narrow, winding, one-way loop is 5.5 miles long and closes seasonally. Buses, trailers and motor homes are not allowed. Expect limited parking at popular stops; waterfall hikes along the route are separate outings, not automatic easy additions. Check road conditions first and never plan around guaranteed wildlife sightings.
Rainy-day swap: aquarium or cabin time
Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is an indoor option with marine exhibits, a shark tunnel and penguins. Review current tickets, daily activities and any separate encounter charges. Allow time for downtown traffic, parking and lunch rather than rushing into another attraction afterward.
A slower day at Dancing Bear can work just as well: cook together, enjoy the arcade and keep plans flexible. The hot tub and infrared sauna are also available; follow equipment instructions and choose use appropriate to your group.
Bring the dog, plan the outings
The cabin welcomes approved pets, but most national-park trails do not. Ordinary leashed pets are allowed on only the Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail within the park trail system. Leashes must be no longer than six feet. Read NPS pet guidance before setting off and arrange suitable pet care for attractions that do not allow them.
Before you go
- Parking: parking longer than 15 minutes generally requires a physical Smokies parking tag. Exceptions apply, and a tag does not reserve a space. Check NPS parking details.
- Weather and closures: check current park conditions and seasonal road status. Do not rely on an old trail itinerary.
- Pool: the shared outdoor pool season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Ask us about access and the current schedule.
- EV charging: charging and a Tesla adapter are available at the cabin. Send us your vehicle model so we can confirm connector compatibility.
- Packing: bring walking shoes, layers, rain protection, water and your family’s day-out essentials. Towels, toiletries, starter consumables and a crib/Pack ’n Play are provided; baby gates are available.
