Choose your arrival route
Depending on where you’re coming from, compare the Galveston–Port Bolivar ferry route with a road-only approach via the eastern end of the peninsula. Check live traffic and weather before choosing; the best route can change with queues and conditions.
The TxDOT ferry page links to current waits, cameras and operating information. The crossing itself takes about 20 minutes, with loading, unloading and potentially substantial queue time on top. Severe weather can reduce or suspend service. Ordinary pets must remain inside their owner’s vehicle, so a walk-on trip is not an option with a pet dog; service-animal rules are separate.
Have groceries and first-night essentials planned before check-in at 4 PM. Keep any arrival-day reservation flexible.
Know the home’s layout
SeaHorsin Around has two king bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a bunk room with twin-over-twin and twin-over-full bunks plus a full-size trundle. Maximum occupancy is 10 guests.
All living spaces are on one raised level reached by exterior stairs. A gate sits at the top of the stairs onto the front porch; please supervise children and use it properly. A crib/Pack ’n Play and high chair are available. The concrete parking area accommodates up to three vehicles.
The yard is fenced, but pets still need supervision and closed gates. Ask us about stairs, sleeping arrangements or your pet before booking.
Day 1: a beach day close to home
The beach is approximately a three-minute walk from the house. Start with a manageable beach session, then return for lunch or a rest when your group needs one. We provide basic beach gear and two chairs; bring extra chairs, sun protection, drinking water and any specialty equipment.
Vehicles use this beach. Set up with vehicle movement in mind and closely supervise children when crossing the driving lane. Keep dogs leashed, bring shade and water, and clean up after them.
If you drive to the beach, check Galveston County’s beach-parking sticker requirements. Stickers are required outside designated free zones; use the current county information for purchase options and rules. Follow posted restrictions and current surf and weather advice.
Day 2: choose one easy outing
Ships and history at Fort Travis
Fort Travis Park offers waterfront views, picnic space and an outdoor history stop. Think ship-watching and a walk rather than a guaranteed tour inside the old batteries. Check current park hours before planning a late visit. Bring sun protection and insect repellent; exposed grounds are less appealing in heavy rain. Dogs must follow county park rules.
Birdwatching at High Island
Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary is an option for curious children and birdwatchers, with a canopy walkway and seasonal rookery activity. Sightings vary by season and conditions. Check current entrance arrangements, admission and opening information before going; bring insect repellent, water and binoculars if you have them.
Dogs and other domestic animals are not allowed in the sanctuary. Read the sanctuary policies and plan suitable pet care.
Make the ferry the outing
For a simple trip without a car, TxDOT provides walk-on parking on both sides. Enjoy the ships and seabirds, with possible dolphin sightings, then return. Check waits and conditions first, follow crew directions and remember that ordinary pets must stay in a vehicle.
Rainy-day plan: home time or a Galveston excursion
A quiet afternoon cooking, reading or playing a game at the house avoids making weather and ferry queues the center of your day.
For a larger planned outing, the Aquarium Pyramid at Moody Gardens on Galveston Island offers indoor marine exhibits. Compare single-attraction and package tickets, and check hours for your date. Allow generous travel time from the peninsula. It is an option for ordinary rainy weather, not a reason to travel during dangerous weather or ferry disruption. Pets are not allowed inside attractions; arrange care rather than leaving them in a vehicle.
